PALMA THERE were 802 new cars sold in the Balearics during the first fortnight of October, a rise of 39.5 percent in comparison with the same period last year, said the National Association of Car Sales Companies (Ganvam) yesterday.

The growth in year-on-year sales figures at a national level was not quite so encouraging with an increase of 27.8 percent during the first two weeks of this month in comparison with the same dates last year. For the second month running now, the car sales industry has been showing clear signs of recuperation as a direct result of a Central Government aid package to move stock which had been piling up in car showrooms. The public is being encouraged to purchase new vehicles with a subsidy from both national and regional governements and the car manufacturers of up to 2'000 euros.
