STAFF REPORTER THE Social Welfare department on Palma City Council said yesterday that it is joining forces with local non-governmental organisations in an attempt to wipe out poverty on a global scale.

The announcement came on the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, with a department spokesman saying that the Council wants to ensure “solid” financial backing for projects which would not just be “occasional,” but ones which would form part of an ongoing strategy supported by all political parties. The spokesman said that a clear order of priorities would have to be established whereby aid went first to underprivileged countries and to campaigns to raise public awareness. This Monday, a cross-party Council meeting is being held to firm up a plan of action.
