Nearly 50 pupils and their teachers were evacuated from the Andratx infant school yesterday after some bales of straw caught fire near the rear of the school building.

The alarm was raised at 10.45am, according a 112 spokesperson.
Fire fighters from Calvia, with support from the Andratx Local Police, attended the scene and, fortunately, the fire did not cause any damage to the building, just a thick black plume of smoke.

After the flames were extinguished and the building inspected, the pupils and teachers were allowed to return to their classes just after midday.
