Five of Spain's leading shipping companies, which all serve the Balearics, were yesterday fined a total of 54 million for “operating as a cartel” and price fixing.

The fines were handed out yesterday by the National Monopolies Commission and the five penalised shipping lines have been accused of price fixing for both merchant and passenger shipping on routes between the mainland and the Balearics.

Only last week, the Bulletin received a letter from a local businessman who wrote complaining about how the shipping companies raise their shipping rates from one day to the next with no former warning.
