Palma.—A major joint security operation is underway after two men, thought to be Spanish, have tried, but failed to kidnap two girls over the past few months.

According to the police leading the investigation, the two men are travelling in a white van and have tried to kidnap girls in Palma and Portals.
The police suspect the two men are dangerous sexual deviants and are carrying out an exhaustive search in order to catch them as quickly as possible.
The first of the attempted kidnaps happened at 12.15pm on February 9.
An 18-year-old girl was walking alone along the road to Portals when a white van pulled up and stopped.
The two men, said to be in their early 30s, offered the teenager a lift. She hesitated and at that moment one of the two men leapt out of the van and grabbed her from behind. However, the victim put up a struggle and eventually managed to elbow him hard in the face, forcing him to let go. At that point she set off running in the direction of Portals and the van was unable to turn around to chase her. On immediately getting home she told her parents who in turn, contacted the police. The second incident happened this Sunday just after 3pm in Palma. Again, the two men pulled up alongside a 16-year-old who was walking alone along a road which crosses calle Aragon.

Again, the teenager was grabbed from behind and this time the aggressor managed to bundle her into the back of the van.
However, the teenager put up such a fight that she managed to wriggle free and leap out of the van before the would-be kidnappers could close the door and drive off. The police are appealing for any one with any information to come forward.
