The National Police have arrested eight people accused of posing as bogus gas inspectors and targeting elderly people in and around the capital.
In one case, they managed to swindle an 82-year-old woman out of 69'000 euros.
In another, they apparently conned a 70-year-old man out of 17'000 euros.
The eight detainees vary in age from 25 to 50 and the arrests have come as a result of an ongoing investigation by the police into bogus gas and electricity inspectors.

Sources close to the investigation also revealed that in some cases, the victims were apparently threatened if they did not pay.
