Palma.—Palma Local Police and the capital's environmental inspectors have denounced 395 dog owners as a result of a five week campaign carried out in the city to establish if dog owners are complying by the municipal rules and regulations.

According to the results of the campaign, 45 percent of those owners who were denounced were punished for not having their dog on a lead.
During the campaign, a total of 2'605 controls were carried out to also establish if dog owners were clearing up after their pets, that their dogs were correctly micro chipped and that those owners of dangerous dogs complied with the relevant rules.

The other 55 percent of those owners denounced were caught either not cleaning up after their pet, not having their dog fitted with the obligatory microchip or not carrying the correct documentation for their dangerous dogs.

In a statement yesterday, the city council reminded dog owners that there are four special parks where they can be let off the lead but otherwise, they must not be allowed to run free round the city.

What is more, dog owners have been reminded that since 1999, dogs have to be fitted with a microchip and that there are currently 66'458 dogs registered in Palma.

14 dog owners were fined for not cleaning up after their pets while 73 owners were denounced for not having the correct license for a dangerous dog.
Nine were taken away to the Son Reus municipal dog pound where they will remain until their owners have the correct paper work in order.
There are currently 700 dangerous dogs licenses in Palma.
The inspectors intercepted 23 dogs which were not properly vaccinated.
Palma City Council sources said yesterday that the inspectors are always in plain clothes because dog owners change their attitude when they see a member of the police or environmental inspection squad approaching.
