The Socialists in Opposition on Calvia town council denied yesterday that there had been a surplus of funds in the municipal coffers last year to the tune of a million euros, as claimed by the ruling Partido Popular (PP) Mayor Manuel Onieva earlier this week.

Socialist spokesman Alfonso Rodriguez Badal said that the PP were merely “trying to deceive people.” He said that although the accounts had technically been closed correctly for 2011, the true state of affairs was that 9.8 million euros of invoices owed to different suppliers were simply rolled over into plans for the 2012 budget.
