Balearic Socialist spokesperson Pilar Costa claimed yesterday that the Partido Popular (PP) Central Government, has “deceived the whole of Spanish society” through the introduction of austerity measures and tax rises announced in the national budget for 2012.

The PP's legislation on emergency fiscal measures to reduce the public deficit and a programme of cutting 27 billion euros from public spending, said Costa, mean that instead of the wealthy having to pay higher taxes everyone in the country will be having to do so. “This,” she said “is in blatant contradiction of the PP's election manifesto and means hardship for people who can't afford it.”
