Palma.—The Balearic government wants the city of Palma to become a leading light in terms of using the most modern forms of renewable energy, and to that end is setting up an international competition to secure the most discrete and appropriate design of wind farms.

Since the introduction of giant wind farms which some say have scarred the landscape of the mainland, technology has advanced and there are now options available which are far more discrete and which make much less noise. Some models are already functioning in coastal city parks in countries such as China, and are known as Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT). Balearic government Energy director Jaime Ochogavia said yesterday that such revolutionary designs are ideal for Palma where the pilot project will be set up although Minorca has also expressed interest. Surplus energy generated will be transmitted to the general network, he said.
