Mules and horses are being used to keep down vegetation growth in the fire breaks in the Llevant nature reserve in Arta as per an agreement between the local town council and the Balearic Nature Protection Institute (Ibanat).

Environment Councillor on Arta council Guillem Caldentey explained yesterday that the town hall has taken on the responsibility of providing water for the animals in a gesture to show how grateful it is to Ibanat for its continued support in keeping the fire breaks open, particularly during such a dry spring. The animals were first used in Arta last year but were sent to Huesca in the autumn prior to returning to Majorca for the winter.
