The Balearic government yesterday confirmed that it is dismantling the management structure set up to oversee La Gola nature park and bird watching centre in Pollensa.

Local political parties and environmentalists had recently been critical of the fact that that the bird watching centre hasn't opened up to visitors this season as had been originally planned by Pollensa Council. The centre is the only one of its kind in the Balearic Islands and was seen as part of a wider plan to encourage ornothological tourism in the region.

In response, the government has said that it will be officially closing the park's management organisation at the end of June this year. La Gola park management was originally set up in 2004, with representation from both the Balearic government and Pollensa town council. Its aim was to create a nature park within an urban environment, from the coastal fresh water wetlands of La Gola, a haven for bird life. After the dissolution of the current management, the “Espais de Natura Balear” company which is part of the regional Environment ministry will take over the control and maintenance of La Gola nature park.
