Palma -The Balearic government made it clear yesterday that is has no intention of reducing the budget for the running of Marivent Palace “because it is very proud” of the royal family.

For decades, the Spanish royal family have spent their Easter and Summer holidays at the palace on the outskirts of Palma, but in view of the recession which is continuing to grip Spain, left wing opposition parties have been calling for the Balearic government to reduce the amount of public funds used for the up keep of the palace.

Over the past year, the Spanish royal family has been very much in the public eye and even published their annual expenditure.
However, according to the leader of the PSM-IV-Entesa left wing coalition in the Balearics, Biel Barcelo, the Balearic government has in fact increased its budget for Marivent by 200'000 euros “when there are people with no jobs and children with no food.”
