Palma/Madrid.—There were 6'315 less people registered as unemployed in the Balearics in April this year in comparison with the previous month of March, a downturn of 6.57 percent, the Central Government's Ministry for Employment confirmed yesterday. A spokesman claimed that although there were still 89'087 without a job in the Balearics last month, the Islands were the region of the country where unemployment had fallen the most in April this year.

However, when compared to April in 2011, the year-on-year regional unemployment figure had risen by 8.69 percent with a further 7'181 people out of work than during the same period last year.

Although Central Government reported that the percentage of the working population securing jobs last month was the highest in the country, it was in Andalucia where unemployment fell the most in absolute terms; 7'571 less on the dole than in March this year.

Across the country as a whole, unemployment fell last month after eight consecutive months of increasing joblessness, but there are still 4'744'235 people actively seeking work who can't find any.

In the Balearics, unemployment fell in nearly all areas of industry, particularly in the service sector where 5'836 people found jobs last month but still leaving 64'342 hopefuls disappointed.

Meanwhile 315 applicants found jobs in the construction industry whilst a further 15'552 are still searching for work in this sector.
There were however a further 70 people registered as unemployed last month who have had no previous job experience at all.
