Palma.—The birth rate in the Balearics fell for the third year running last year. There were 11'358 births, 609 less than in 2010, the National Institute of Statistics said yesterday in a Central Government commissioned report.

The birth rate in the Balearics was confirmed for last year as 10.4% whilst it had been 11.07 in 2010. The decline was attributed to a sharp downturn in the number of children being born to mothers of foreign communities in the Islands. Whereas among Spaniards, the year-on-year fall in birth rate had been 2.46%, it had been 10.93% among foreigners.

Meanwhile, the death rate rose last year to 7.15 whereas it had been 7.11 in 2010. However, there were still more births than deaths last year.
