Madrid.—Emergency Services (112) reported 32 incidents caused by the sudden burst of bad weather although none of them were serious. The areas worst affected were Palma, Calvia, Andratx and Pollensa.

A spokesman for 112 said that the nature of calls from the public chiefly related to fallen trees, boats which had been forced adrift, people in danger at sea, risk from falling objects off balconies and rooftops, damage to private property, an accident in a boat at sea (but without injuries to crew or passengers), and a collapsing awning which injured one person. “Out of the blue” Local Police said that around 5pm, there was a drastic change in the weather off Camp de Mar in the municipality of Andratx. A tornado, as if conjured out of the blue, rushed in towards the beach area forcing bathers and tourists to run for shelter in a nearby hotel. The tornado tore on to cause more chaos in Calvia and then on to Palma where in Secar de la Real, el Amanecer, around the Ocimax and Ciudad Jardin and el Molinar areas, the wind ripped down signposting, awnings and trees. Firemen in Palma responded to seven Emergency callouts whilst in Andratx, a boat was smashed against the Paseo Maritimo by the force of the gale.

On the road to Soller, at the RCD Mallorca premises, a large iron gate was pulled off its hinges after yielding to the tremendous power of the tornado. By way of contrast, some areas of Majorca were little affected by the freak weather.
