Palma.—The Majorcan Federation of Small to Medium-sized Businesses (Pimem) has claimed that the VAT increase deals a “savage blow” to the self-employed, and to smaller businesses, but “favours hypermarkets, large chain stores and department stores,“ represented by their management association “CEOE”.

Pimem's President, Jaume Xavier Roselló said he considered that the introduction of an increased VAT rate announced by Tax Minister Cristobal Montoro, “contradicts the Partido Popular's general election promise” of supporting the smaller business sector.

Roselló accused the Partido Popular (PP) of “doing everything they said they were not going to do” just a few months after they had won the elections, and of pandering to the CEOE and its “big business” members.

Roselló said the Balearic government of the setting up of a committee to coordinate government policy towards small businesses “inspired little confidence”
