Palma.—Come last night, fire fighters had battled a total of eleven fires in Majorca since the start of the week and two were still alight.
The Son Caliu blaze which started on Monday was still smouldering after having destroyed over 70 hectares of scrub and wood land and the blaze in Algaida, which led to the Manacor road being temporally closed and disrupted flights, was also still active.

However, the emergency services were being pushed to their limits by the Lluchmajor pyromaniac who started five fires within fifteen minutes of each other yesterday.

Eyewitnesses have come forward and spoken to the Guardia Civil of a man having been spotted near each of the fires but at going to press last night, the hunt continued.

The alarm was first raised at 2.15pm when a fire was reported on the Son Granada estate between Las Palmeras and Maioris. 15 minutes later, a second was reported between Son Veri Nou and Cala Blava. Then, another 15 minutes later, the third fire was reported near the Lluchmajor race track where there are large fuel and gas deposits.

Then, the pyromaniac started two fires along the s'Aranjassa road. The five fires stretched the fire fighters to their limits and air support proved vital in rapidly bringing all of the fires under control during the afternoon.

The Guardia Civil are chasing up two vehicles spotted near the fires and are confident an arrest will be quickly made.
Elsewhere on the island, just over two hectares of farm land was destroyed by another forest fire in sa Pobla, near the Albufera natural park.
