German Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle, yesterday gave his backing to the austerity measures being introduced by the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy during a meeting of the Berlin Club in Palma.

Westerwelle has been presiding a meeting of the so-called club of the 11 most pro-European EU member states in the Majorcan capital this weekend and yesterday he and the other ten foreign ministers attending the meeting, were received by Crown Prince Felipe at the Almudaina Palace.

Westerwelle admitted that some of the measures Rajoy has taken will be very tough for some people “but we support the line he is taking because there was no alternative. “Spain is a solid and strong country and it will regain its competitiveness and begin creating jobs again once the austerity measures begin taking affect,” the German Foreign Minister, who has a house in Son Vida, said.
