Palma.—A delivery lorry crashed early yesterday morning into a Council of Majorca vehicle whose staff were carrying out maintenance work on the hard shoulder of the Inca motorway. Four people were seriously injured and one of them is in a critical condition.

The accident happened about 10am at the 22.5 kilometre mark on the motorway not far from Inca. Accident investigators confirmed the collision took place on a straight stretch of road where visibility was good. It is as yet not clear why the delivery lorry veered onto the hard shoulder, hitting the maintenance vehicle from behind.

The impact was tremendous with the driver of the Council of Majorca vehicle sustaining serious chest and shoulder blade injuries, and his co-driver a spinal fracture.

Meanwhile, the driver of the lorry owned by the José Crespí Mir company based in Sa Pobla, was also badly injured but his colleage, a woman, was thrown out of the van, cracking the base of her skull, paramedics who attended the scene of the accident said.

Traffic chaos resulted with tailbacks stretching back kilometres.
