Puigpunyent.—At about 2am yesterday morning, three hooded knife wielding robbers entered the Es Pont bar in Puigpunyent just as the proprietress was closing the premises. They leapt over the bar, hit the proprietress and pushed a knife against the neck of one of the waiters.

Tomeu, co-owner and husband of the proprietress said that the men, reportedly young Arabs, assaulted his wife mercilessly even when she told them that the cash for the day had already been removed from the till. The thieves eventually made off with a day's takings of around 700 euros. The distraught husband was very critical of Local Police whom he claimed failed to notify the Guardia Civil of the attack. His wife is now recovering in hospital but the episode has been so shocking that the owner now has no wish to continue the business. “We've been robbed before by these people,” said Tomeu. “They've broken windows, fruit machines but we've been able to make claims on insurance for damage. But this time, they've gone too far.” Meanwhile, residents in Puigpunyent were complaining yesterday of inadequate policing in the area.
