Palma.More than 500 firefighters and 27 water-carrying airplanes and helicopters were deployed yesterday to try to extinguish the fire affecting a mountainous area of Valencia.
Officials say a forest fire fanned by gusting winds has forced the evacuation of some 2'000 people from a handful of small mountain towns . So extensive and fierce were the flames that the smell of smoke, fanned by prevailing winds were smelt in Majorca yesterday morning. Complaints of a unspecified burning smell were reported in Palma and across the eastern side of the island.
