Government considers providing “sick pay” for government workers

The negotiating committee for Civil Servants is to propose to education, health and general services sectors of regional government that they demand “sick pay” when they have to be off work. The subsidy is currently denied them under emergency measures imposed by Central Government to try and reduce costs in public administration and bring down the national deficit. Civil Service director general Nuria Riera and the unions have agreed that once each sector has debated the move, a fresh Assembly will establish a common goal. Separately Riera wants to find a solution for those who have taken up a government post and then have to abandon it for reasons of ill health.
