Palma.—An estimated one thousands cyclists yesterday participated in a silent tribute to a local cyclists who was killed 15 days ago along the old Inca road between Festival Park and Santa Maria.

The tribute was organised via the internet and other social media networks and more cyclists than expected turned up, according to Sinto Sanz, member of the Majorcan Cycling federation and one of the organisations of the commemorative event.

23 -year-old Vinceç Suau was a member of the Es Pedal de Bunyola cycling club and yesterday's tribute was not only mounted in honour of a lost colleague but to also increase drivers'' awareness of the need to take more care when cyclists are on the road.

Every year, scores of cyclists, be they local or foreign, are killed on the island's road and cycle clubs want more to be done to increase their security and safety and this was addressed in a speech given by the victim's girlfriend, Clara Marquez to mark the beginning of the commemorations.

Then, the thousand cyclists , some of which were professionals, club members or simple amateurs, set off from the Festival Park car park at 9.15am and slowly and silently, made their way to the scene of where Suau was killed just over two weeks ago.

Once at the scene, just a kilometre from Festival Park, all of the cyclists stopped and help a minute's silence before a wreath was laid in front of a white bicycle before they all continued on to Santa Maria.
