An anti-smoking section of the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist department at Son Espases hospital in Palma, gave assistance to 556 people in their fight to give up tobacco last year.
Unit Coordinator Gabriel Jaume claimed yesterday that the service has a 60 percent success rate, referring to the proportion of clients who are able to give up smoking after a year of consultations.
Jaume said that patients attending the unit are mostly those who are suffering from a medical condition for which they have been advised to give up smoking altogether. An entire physiological assessment is given of patients before starting the course, he explained.
