Palma.—A 54-year-old man who had travelled from Barcelona with his wife to spend the festive holidays with his family here in Majorca was tragically knocked down and killed yesterday.

The incident happened along the Lluchmajor motor way at 8.45 am.
According to the traffic police, visibility was extremely poor because of the thick fog.
The victim was later identified as Emilio Raventos Batet and he and his wife had only landed in Majorca earlier yesterday morning to pick up a hire car and drive to Calonge in Santanyi where they intended to celebrate New Year with the family.

Just as they reached the turn off for the race track along the Lluchmajor motor way, the 54-year-old, blinded by the thick fog, apparently nudged a vehicle in front.

Both drivers pulled up on the hard shoulder to inspect the damage and, if necessary, exchange insurance details.
But, just as Emilio opened his door and went to get out, he was hit by another vehicle.
It appears that the driver of the vehicle didn't see Emilio because of the thick fog.
The 112 emergency centre dispatched the Local Police, paramedics and the Guardia Civil to the scene, which was immediately closed off because of the poor visibility.

Paramedics battled at the scene but tragically there was nothing they could do to save the life of the 54-year-old due to the extent of the serious injuries he had suffered as a result of the collision.
