By Staff Reporter THERE was further evidence of a slowdown in the Balearic economy yesterday with news that new car sales fell by a record 37 percent. Also a report suggested that the people of the islands intend to spend far less in the annual January sales.

A total of 32'000 fewer new cars were sold in the Balearics last year, according to the official figures, higher than the national average.
Overall in Spain last year an estimated one million new cars were sold compared to 1.6 million in 2007.
Car dealerships say that during the last two years almost one million fewer vehicles have been sold (600'000 in 2008 and 400'000 in 2007).
