Palma.—It was a peaceful start to the New Year in the Balearics with the number of incidents which required the involvement of the emergency services falling by almost 50 percent.

It was also an extremely quiet festive period with a major fall in the number of emergency calls handled by police. During the build-up to the festive period the local authorities invested plenty of resources in prevention campaigns and the police proved especially active.

Police carried out hundreds of vehicle spot checks and scores of officers were on duty over the New Year to combat drink-driving. A police spokesperson said that overall the majority of people had been well behaved over the festive period and thanked them for their co-operation.
