THE President of the Balearics, Francesc Antich, used his New Year's address last night to pay tribute to the two members of the Guardia Civil killed by an ETA car bomb in Palma Nova this summer and sent a message of gratitude and encouragement to all the members of the various security forces for their important role in the fight against terrorism.

Antich, whose address was broadcast on local television stations yesterday evening, praised the Balearic public as well for its defiant response to the wave of bomb attacks Majorca suffered and for refusing to give in to the terrorists.

The President also spared a thought for the construction workers who lost their lives in the Capdepera hotel collapse and the residents who died when a block of flats came crashing down in Palma. “This taught us important lessons about the need to increase and tighten measures of security and also give the emergency and fire services all the support and backing they require,” Antich said.
