Palma.—The Balearic government yesterday announced the creation of the Balears Film Commission whose aim will be to encourage movie-makers to invest in Majorca.

Major international films have already been shot on the island, including Cloud Atlas starring Tom Hanks and Halle Barry.
Also, the major British film studio Pinewood/Shepperton is looking at investing on Majorca and has not ruled out the possibility of building a film studio here. Talks have already taken place with the Balearic government.

The Balears Film Commission will be partly funded by the Balearic government and the Council of Majorca. Already the Council has said that they would be allocating around 80'000 euros a year to the project.

Private funding could also be made available. Film-makers say that Majorca is an ideal location to make movies because of its stunning countryside and good weather.

The Commission should be fully functioning by April and it hopefully it should channel movie-making success into the Balearics.
