CIVIL defence scaled back their bad weather alert yesterday after winds in excess of 100kph battered the Balearics on New Year´s Day.

A major clean-up operation was underway yesterday in the Playa de Palma and the Port of Andratx, two places which were severely hit by the adverse weather conditions.

The fire brigade received almost 50 weather-related emergency calls on Friday. Damage to public property was high, according to initial estimates.
The Palma Met Office said yesterday that the unsettled weather would continue today, with cloud and scattered showers being forecast.
The high winds battered most of the Mediterranean coast and on the mainland the gale-force winds caused heavy damage.

The Port of Andratx has been severely hit by adverse weather conditions in the last 12 months with yachts moored in the bay paying a heavy price.
The Playa de Palma yesterday was littered with the debris of the gale force winds.
