THE New Year heralded a whole series of prices rises. Electricity prices rise by 2.6 percent, a bottle of butane gas goes up by 3.4 percent to 11 euros while the price of a stamp goes up by six percent. The standard price of a train fare also increases.

The move comes as the government prepares to introduce an increase in the VAT rate later this year.
The Spanish government has defended the price rises saying that they are needed to cover basic increases in costs.
