THE Balearic emergency services received a total of almost 1'000 calls over the New Year celebrations of which 143 were described as serious incidents.

The majority of the calls for help were as a result of traffic accidents and according to police, there were a wide range of incidents some of which resulted in injuries.

The bulk of all the incidents took place in Majorca, with a total of 42 traffic accidents taking place. The police were also called to deal with fights and a number of incidents involving drunk and disorderly conduct.

Thousands of people toasted in the New Year in restaurants and clubs across the island. At the Plaza Cort in Palma hundreds of people gathered to see in the New Year with the traditional “grapes of luck” and champagne.

Along the Paseo Maritimo the party lasted well into yesterday morning. A major clean-up operation was underway yesterday to remove all the debris.
Hundreds of police officers had been on duty over the New Year and there were spot checks on many of the main roads.
