STAFF REPORTER THE island road building programme which was approved by the Council of Majorca two weeks ago includes the prospect of a third ring road around Palma. It would start on the Llucmajor motorway and finish on the road to s'Esglaieta.

The plan makes no mention of specific dates but states instead that work on the project must begin during the first phase of road programme revision, which is before 2016, and “must finish” prior to 2024.

The route of the “third ring road” as a government white paper explains, would run roughly parallel to - but well outside - the already-approved second ring road and the road from Carrefour at Coll d'en Rabassa to the AlCampo hypermarket. The construction of the planned dual carriageway would, in some sections, use already existing roads but there would also be a new section linking the Cami de sa Siquia which runs between Can Pastilla and the Manacor to Palma dual carriageway with the road from Jardí which runs from Portol as far as the Inca motorway.
