STAFF REPORTER ALL marine reserves in the Balearic Islands have now been provided with fast response launches with radar and GPS direction finders, Patricia Arbona, regional government Fisheries director said yesterday.

Arbona claimed that contracting professional lookout teams and acquiring the necessary seagoing equipment was as viable to control human activity in the offshore reserves as it was to keep a check on marine life.

The Director pointed to major investment which had been made during the term of office of the present Balearic government in lookout personnel and equipment at El Toro and las Malgrats marine parks off the coast of Majorca.

ON THE SPOT RESEARCH
Both were reserve areas which had long been requiring closer monitoring of fishing activity and scientific investigation into the evolution of sea life.

Government purchases had also included a powerful launch, capable of responding to any incidents at sea for the Els Freus marine reserve located between Ibiza and Formentera.
