A total of 91'098 people spent Christmas and New Year out of work in the Balearics but, according to the local government, unemployment is starting to bottom out and a slow but steady reduction in the number of jobless will begin to be seen during the second quarter of this year.

However, Balearic government spokesperson and Minister for Employment, Joana Barcelo, warned yesterday that, while unemployment did not hit the psychological barrier of 100'000 at the end of last year, as the unions were predicting, a further increase in the number of people out of work is expected over the next couple of months.
