PALMA
TWO of the main covered public swimming pools in Palma are still uncovered after the storm last year which ripped off their steel roofs as if they were paper.

Hundreds of members of the Principes de España baths in Son Castello and the Palau d'Esports baths in Son Moix are complaining daily about the length of time the work is taking.

In the case of the Principes de España baths, half of the roof is still on the ground, whereas the other half is precariously balanced on top of the structure. The Balearic Ministry of Sport has still not given the members a date for the reopening of the outdoor swimming pool, which is reserved for the summer months.

In Son Moix the work is ongoing, although it is more complex. According to sources from the Municipal Institute for Sport (IME), it is being considered whether now is an opportune moment for a complete refurbishment of the pool after 30 years of service.

During the next few weeks a project will be presented for the refurbishment and modernisation of the whole of the complex, which is dedicated to swimming. It is estimated that the work will be finished by the beginning of 2010.

The other three public swimming baths, Son Hugo, Germans Escales and S'Estel, are still functioning normally. The sports network will be increased during this year with four more covered swimming pools, which will double the existing ones on offer, and will be a priority, say the Ministry.
