THE cold snap, accompanied by gale force winds, which has gripped the Balearics since last Thursday driving temperatures below zero and dusting the mountains in snow, is over.

The Director of the Balearic Meteorological Office, Agustin Jansa, who on Friday admitted that the near hurricane winds which battered the Balearics causing serious damage were fiercer and stronger than expected, yesterday said that the polar front froze the islands over the weekend has moved away and temperatures are going to return to normal over the coming days.

However, more snow was forecast above 1'000 metres last night as minimum temperatures in the mountains and central Majorca fell to around zero so black ice is going to be the threat this morning.

From tomorrow, Jansa said that maximum temperatures will return to around 15ºC, the norm for this time of year and nearly three times the maximum of 6ºC registered on Saturday.
