Palma.—The average Spanish resident will have put on between three and five kilos in weight (about 6.6 to 11 pounds) over the festive season, according to nutritionists.

As well as the typical Christmas spread, sweets and chocolates are constantly picked at, and alcohol consumed in larger quantities, all leading to an expanding waistline.

And although Spanish people celebrate with a slap-up meal on Christmas Eve night and are back to work on Boxing Day, the Three Kings festivals over the Epiphany meant even more family meals and traditional cakes. To get back in shape after the Christmas splurge, dieticians recommend choosing low-fat, high-protein foodstuffs together with plenty of vegetables, and not to skip any meals.

Lean meat such as chicken, turkey or shoulder of lamb, fish and seafood are suggested as sources of protein, together with salads or steamed vegetables.

Snacking between meals, and desserts, should involve fresh fruit, according to experts, and daily exercise of at least half an hour should form part of every slimming plan.
