Palma de Majorca.—Winter Sales breathed new life into the commerce sector last weekend with the first Sunday shop opening of the year boosting what Assocition President Bernat Coll described as an “excellent start” to the Winter Sales.

Both Coll and Bartomeu Servera, the head of regional Commerce Federation “Afedeco” agreed that 2012 had shown “much greater promise” than the same period in 2011, although this season had the edge because the Sales began on a Saturday.

Servera pointed out that these Sales will determine the fate of between 6 and 7 percent of independent retailers who for the past three years have hardly had enough income to keep their premises open. Coll and Servers said that although forecasts for spending by the public in this season's Sales are not optimistic, months of what appears to have been low consumer confidence in the run up to Christmas and the New Year may now mean that people are going to take full advantage of vast reductions in prices.

Discounts at major chain stores and hypermarkets were already hitting the 50 percent mark for certain items last weekend.
