ANDRATX
FRUSTRATED motorists in Andratx will be glad to hear that plans are underway to build the town's first underground car park in the Avenida de la Curia.

The council has already commissioned a geotechnical study to determine if the area is suitable for such a facility.
The Mayor, Francesc Femenias, stressed that it was the wish of the council to build carparks in the town. “There has been a lot of building without planning and we are starting to have a serious problem with parking in the town,” he said.
In addition to this underground carpark, the council are investigating the possibility of building others above ground.
The Mayor said that some of these could be provisional, like the one next to the cemetery.
However, the first job is the construction of an underground carpark. Femenias said that this had already been proposed by the PSOE (the Spanish Socialist Party), but during the last few years the need for car parking spaces had increased.

The council opted for the Avenida de la Curia because the area is next to the children's park and the bus stop.
It is one of the areas with the greatest demand for parking, especially on market days when people come into town to do their shopping.
In addition to this, many of the new developments which have been built in Andratx during the past few years have no car parking facilities for the residents, which has aggravated the problem of parking in the town.

Andratx council will hold a meeting on January 22 at 8pm in the Castillo de Son Mas to inform the residents of the town about the possible extension of the protected area of the Tramuntana.
