Staff Reporter FOLLOWING the imposition of a total smoking ban at the beginning of the year, bars, cafeterias and restaurants on Majorca are aiming to create private smoking clubs.

The Restauraters' sector of the small to medium-sized business association “Pimem” have already launched a proposal, the first in Spain, to go before Central Government's Health ministry next week.

The idea is to set up a revolving platform in the interior of the premises so that staff can serve food and drink to the smoking clients without having to have direct contact with them.

Juan Cabrera, head of “Pimem's” Restaurateurs' Association explained that there will be a different door to enter the premises and the smokers' club so that both sections of the establishment will be separated by a party wall. It is through this wall that the revolving platform would be built from where smokers would be served and their money taken. Orders would theoretically be placed through a microphone system.

Cabrera said that between 30 and 40 owners a day were wanting to subscribe to the scheme.
