Palma de Majorca.—The annual toll of road accidents in the Balearics at the end of 2011 stood at 3'353 in which 1'702 people became victims; 48 of these died within 24 hours of the accident happening, the regional Traffic department reported yesterday.

However, the final death toll was a 14.2 percent downturn in the number of accident victims in 2010.
The Traffic department said that there had been a significant decline in fatal road crashes in 2008 and 2009, and although there was a slight upturn in the number of victims in 2010, 2011 has seen fatalities fall again. Of the total, 79 percent (38) had died in road accidents on out-of-town roads whilst 10 had died in urban areas, the same percentage split recorded in 2010.

For the first time in recorded history, there were no deaths at all on Balearic roads last year in February.
