Staff reporter FIRE gutted a Syp supermarket and an adjacent bar and shop in Alaro yesterday. The blaze started at 5am and spread quickly through the three establishments. The alarm was raised by a neighour who was woken by his barking dog. He saw the flames and called the police before being evacuated along with a number of residents in the area as the blaze spread through the supermarket.




Fire fighters from Inca rushed to the scene but the fierce fire caused major damage - not only to the supermarket but also to the evacuated flats above. The only way of accessing the flats yesterday afternoon was by a ladder because the stairwell was destroyed by the blaze, and residents will not be able to return home until the building has been inspected by structural engineers.

The Guardia Civil have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
