STAFF REPORTER REPORTS are that Palma's “Night of Fire” to be held on Sunday, 25th January and which forms part of the coming San Sebastian festivals is going to be even more spectacular than it was last year.

The speculation came yesterday from Palma's Culture and Citizen Activity councillor Eberhard Grosske who confirmed that the entire celebration will have the same funding of 400'000 euros as it did in January 2008. Popular singer Maria del Mar Bonet is scheduled to appear as an entertainer on three separate occasions during the festivities.

During a presentation of the coming Atiar Foc 2009 (fireworks), Grosske confirmed that there will be no aerial displays this year. Although last year's fireworks were never proven as the culprit, suspicions remain about the fact that strong noise and vibration may be damaging the delicate stained glass windows of the city's cathedral. Grosske was accompanied at the presentation yesterday in the Parc de la Mar by Cultural Events director, Joan Font who was “prodded” into action by 18 hooded “devils.” The costumed demon-like figures which will be “terrorising” audiences on the 25th, are in fact local people who form “devil clans” coming from different suburbs of Palma.
