PALMA
NEARLY half of Majorca's winter crops have been destroyed by the bad weather over the past two months according to a report published yesterday the regional Ministry for Agriculture.

In areas around Maria de la Salut and Sineu, the two worst hit, 45 percent of the fields are still under water and 45 percent of the winter crops have been lost.

The heavy rains have also hit the island's potato farmers. Vital exports to destinations like Britain were seriously delayed and the wet ground has also delayed planting of the new crops which means that this coming year's harvest is going to be late.

The farmers'' union Asaja claims that the rains caused 11 million euros worth of damage.
