PALMA
LAST November, it felt like it was never going to stop raining in the Balearics and, since the start of the year, there has been a continuous blanket of snow on the mountain peaks - more can be expected to fall today and tomorrow - but the long range forecast paints a much brighter picture.

The head of the Balearic Met. office, Agustin Jansa, said yesterday that this year is going to be slightly warmer than previous years.
He explained that last year was one of the coolest here in the Balearics since the start of the decade with maximum temperatures substantially lower than regional averages.

But, with the heavy and persistent rains of November and December still on our minds, last year was actually a touch drier as well.
According to Jansa, last year's records show that, apart from the last two months of the year and May, all the other months were drier than normal with a rainfall defecit recorded for 2008.

Last year's total rainfall was 20 percent down on 2007.
