NEWDESK A Palma air sea rescue helicopter was needed to rescue three allegedly illegal immigrants bound for the Balearics from their stricken vessel 95 miles south of Majorca yesterday.

The boat was actually in an area for which Algerian air sea rescue authorities are responsible but, in cooperation with the Spanish Air Force and the Algerian air sea rescue service, it was a Majorcan crew which flew out to the zone and plucked the trio to safety. The three immigrants were flown back here to Palma by helicopter where they were said to have been safe and sound after having been rescued in “good health”.

A Spanish air force spotter plane also assisted in the operation.
