THE publicised Trans-European Maritime Transport Network is much closer to becoming a reality thanks to the boost the European Union is giving a project that will create four great waterways to be used by millions of tourists from 2010 and which will link the principal Atlantic and Mediterranean destinations.

Four large maritime motorways will connect the major Atlantic and Mediterranean ports for freight and passenger transport and also for cruise ships. According to recent reports, the project's management could opt for France and Spain as reference countries in the so-called ‘Motorways of the Sea'. There are two strategic areas for the ‘Motorways of the Sea' with respect to passenger and freight traffic: the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, both being equally attractive for their nations as well as for shipping and transport companies.

Ports like Palma could be eventually involved in phase two of the project which is much more attractive to the tourist industry
