Disabled to help in winter beach cleaning

THE disabled and mentally ill are this winter going to play an important role in the annual Balearic beach cleaning operation.
The initiative was announced yesterday by the regional Environment Minister Miguel Angel Grimalt who is going to officially unveil the new campaign this morning.

Every winter, a region-wide beach cleaning operation is mounted and the Environment Minister, after a series of talks with disabled associations, believes that by getting the mentally ill involved, it will help their social skills and provide good training for those who are currently preparing to take up a job for the first time in the near future and embark on a new life.

The winter clean up actually started on December 1, but does not conclude until the end of April, the eve of the summer holiday season, and involves the cleaning of 278 beaches in 37 municipalities.
